Fine Art BA (hons) Degree Show

Brookes Fine Art 2009 will showcase an extensive and varied range of work from graduating BA (Hons) students in Fine Art at Oxford Brookes University. The Fine Art Degree at Brookes offers a multi-disciplinary, broad-based approach to the study of Fine Art, encouraging imaginative exploration, creative risk-taking and individual intellectual development, alongside important skills development in a range of technical practices. This exhibition demonstrates a reflective and critical approach by students who possess engaging, diverse and well developed emerging practices. The work in Brookes Fine Art 2009 represents the vast array of differing practices available to contemporary artists, and includes; animation, artist's books, drawing, installation, painting, performance, photography, printmaking, sculpture, sound, and video work.

Many participants have expertise in a range of technical processes. This has provided a sound basis for a broad investigation into creating experimental contemporary art, often utilising new technology, in addition to, and alongside traditional processes. The majority of works in the exhibition will be housed in and around the Richard Hamilton Building on Headington campus: Katherine Allen, Olivia Franklin and Patrick Orrell will make us 'look again' whilst considering the possibilities of painting and drawing as a medium and subject. New technologies enable new ways of making and presenting artworks. For Perce Jerrom these provide the very material from which his works are derived, whilst Graham Dorey makes digital animations in which fictitious but disturbing scenarios evoke real world events. Sebastian Thomas's large sculptural installation takes us further into a potential dystopian and imagined geographic and anthropological environment, whilst Helen McCutcheon explores the darker side of human nature through video installation using ventriloquist dummies. Through action, performance and audience participation, Lauren O'Day considers (amongst other things) what it takes to be a good artist.

The private view will take place on Friday May 22nd 2009, 6-8pm during which the exhibition will be officially opened by Michael Stanley, Director of Modern Art Oxford. Food and drink will be available. Exhibition continues until May 28th.
